Cupcakes are not difficult to bake. Once you have a good recipe, you can make great tasting cupcakes with a little practice. However, frosting your cakes is another matter altogether. If you try to apply frosting with a butter knife or icing spatula, you could easily tear or crumble the cupcakes. Yet, with a few things from your cake decorating supply source and these helpful tips, you can create cupcakes as beautiful as they are tasty.

1. Candy Kiss Cupcakes

If your family loves candy kisses, why not put them on top of your cupcake creations? In fact, you can make your own chocolate kisses with a pastry bag and some chocolate cream frosting. There’s no need to use special frosting tips, just cut about one inch from the bag end. Place the end in the center of the cupcake and squeeze on a blob of frosting. Now, pull the bag up quickly to create the end of the kiss.

2. Add Bright Colors

You don’t have to buy more than one frosting from your cake decorating supply store to add color. Gel coloring is concentrated and adds bright and vivid colors to your creations. If you use paste or gel, put a small amount in your frosting and blend slowly.

3. Eliminate Frosting Splatter

When you fill your pastry bag with frosting, take your time. Fold the bag down around your hand before you fill it and keep forcing the frosting to the end of the bag. When finished, rub out all the excess air bubbles. Air creates splatter when it comes out of the tip.

4. Dipping is Easy

If you have limited time, consider dipping your cupcakes. Thinning the icing makes dipping easier. However, for the most convenience, buy ready-made dipping frosting from your cake decorating supply shop.
