When you look at all the different types of abrasive blast, you may have come across shot blasting media. But what is it, and how does it work?

Since we know that there are many different types of media blast for many varying purposes, let’s take a closer look at shot blasting media and how it is used in a practical way.

The resurfacing process
As soon as we hear the words “shot” and “blast”, we may inherently be expecting some kind of shooting which would be correct. Shot blasting involves the shooting of small spherical steel balls via a centrifugal blast that hits the surface being worked on.

The surface is usually concrete, metal, or something equally as durable, and while steel shots are the most common shot blasting media, other types are also available.

By shooting this media at high velocity at the designated target surface, it can remove impurities, unwanted debris, and other items that do not belong there.

How effective is it?
It is recommended that you look at some online videos of shot blasting or some before and after images to understand the full effectiveness of shot blasting. It can clean surfaces to a degree that shows a night and day difference pre versus post blasting. It can make older surfaces look newer and return them to their original coloration.

However, shot blasting is not just used for cleaning. It is also a great way to prepare a surface for painting or other work. By cleaning and smoothing out the surface, you can have it ready for whatever you need to do.
