Teeth are extremely strong, capable of cutting through the toughest of steaks but they are not indestructible and either through misuse or accident, they can get chipped or broken. Reconstructive dentistry is a form of cosmetic dentistry in Indianapolis IN, the dentist who is skilled in this branch of dentistry can address tooth trauma of this sort and repair it.

When a patient first goes to the dentist with a chipped or broken tooth the dentist will want to know the history, how was it damaged, where and when? In most cases the dentist will X-Ray the tooth to determine the extent of damage and to find out if there is root damage as well. The dentist will ask if there is any pain which is the result of the trauma. If there is little pain and the X-Ray results are negative then the dentist will know that there is no damage to the root and he or she will then be in a position to choose the best course of treatment.

If the tooth has only minor damage, perhaps a small chip and nothing else, the dentist will probably be able to repair the area by simply filing it smooth, as a matter of fact if the damage is negligible the dentist may suggest you leave it alone although it would have to be extremely small for the dentist to suggest this course of action. Cosmetic dentistry has progressed so far in the last few years that even the slightest imperfection can be treated with a custom made porcelain veneer. The veneer is permanently bonded to the tooth, when finished the tooth will be smooth and natural looking.

If the tooth has been seriously chipped or if the patient suffers from pain when eating or drinking this will take a more drastic treatment to rectify the problem. In most cases the cosmetic dentist will recommend a crown. The dentist shapes the broken tooth and prepares what is essentially a cap that fits over the tooth, protecting it and improving the appearance.

If the damage is so bad that the tooth has to be removed the dentist will suggest an implant to take the tooth’s place. An implant consists of a metal screw which is imbedded directly into the jaw bone. After a period of time this screw will become one with the bone and then the dentist can fit a crown on the “new” root.
