Shipping is a matter that you, as a consumer or business entrepreneur need to take seriously. Yet, while many factors affect this aspect of doing business, one of the most important ones is packaging. It is important to understand the various types of shipping containers available and to know which one is best for your product or other item. At its basics, it requires you to make a decision between basic and custom shipping boxes.
Types of Basic Shipping Boxes
Basic shipping containers come in various sizes, shapes and types. The ones most commonly used, and therefore readily available, are:
- The Regular Slotted Carton (RSC): Of all the types of boxes available, this is by far the most common. These are the ones people specifically call shipping boxers. The RSC consists of four outer flaps at the top and four at the bottom. The top or outer flaps meet together at the center. They are closed and taped, stapled or glued there. The corrugated cardboard flutes run parallel to the depth. This makes this type of box easier to stack and provided improved strength.
- Full Overlap Slotted Carton (FOL): This type of shipping box is a variation on the RSC. It has the same number of flaps, but the outer flaps do not overlap completely. The same methods of closing apply. The FOL is popular for shipping where rough handling is suspect because it has an extra thickness of corrugated cardboard to provide that additional protection.
- The Half-Slotted Container (HSC) with Cover: This type of box is available for both shipping and storing on the shelf. Instead of a folding top, it has a tray style one. Without the top, it is a useful open-top container.
While other types of basic are available, e.g. the tuck top mailer, the above are the most common available from companies that make and/or provide shipping boxes.
Custom Shipping Boxes
As the name indicates, custom shipping boxes are custom made. They address the specific need to pack and ship items that do not fit into or cannot safely be contained in standard style boxes. Companies can design and cut the cardboard to fit any possible shape, size or type. Custom shipping boxes are designer cartons. They can carry specific logos or be designed to mimic the shape of the product. They may be a marketing tool or the only means available to handle the shipping requirements of a specific item.
If you have an extraordinary or unique object to ship, make sure you consider the option of a custom shipping carton. Not every company is capable of doing so. Some companies do not do custom work. Yet, you can find companies that are not only qualified but also regularly undertake this type of work. Ask around, do your research and you are sure to find a company that can provide you with the desired custom shipping boxes for those unique and very special items.
