Whether you’re a building contractor or homeowner with a concrete project, you need strong and durable fasteners for your concrete. If you want some of the best-threaded fasteners you can buy, consider high-quality J bolts. Here is more info on j bolts along with important installation tips.

What are J Bolts?

These bolts get their name because they resemble the letter “J.” They come in many different lengths and sizes, and the “J” on the end acts as a hook or anchor. The other end has threads which you can fasten nuts or bolts to. They make excellent mounting hardware and are commonly used in applications to hold down automotive batteries.

Set, Don’t Drill

Anchor bolts aren’t designed to fit into drilled holes. You install some lead anchors by drilling holes and then setting the anchors. However, if you want the most effective mounts, it’s best to use J-shaped anchors and place them while the concrete is still wet.

Always put the “J” end into the wet concrete. This allows the threaded part to stick out above the level of the hardened concrete. You’ll have the perfect mounts when you attach your material and bolt it down.

Set the Anchors Last

It’s important to pour the concrete and then level it with a float tool. To make sure you get the bolts into the right place, measure them according to your plan. You should leave at least 2 inches of space from the edge of the concrete. This helps to prevent cracking which could ruin your concrete job and anchors.

Anchor Installation

When you insert your J bolts, install them at a slight angle. Move each one a little to remove air bubbles and then straighten them out. Smooth the concrete around all your anchors and keep an eye on them during the setting process, to make sure they stay straight.
