When it comes to custom powder coating finishing companies have two major goals:

  1. Aesthetically appealing appearance
  2. Physical and chemical properties or qualities

The system required to accomplish these two objectives consists of several distinct processes working sequentially. Under a team of professionals using the best technology possible, these methods combine to produce the necessary results. For many OEMs in Grand Rapids, the need is for their components to specifically be corrosion resistant.

Producing Corrosion Resistant Components

Custom powder coatings are the means through which finishing companies across the states, including Grand Rapids MI, address the needs of certain metal substrates and/or the specific demands of OEMs. The overall intent is for their products to be characterized by durability, longevity, and corrosion resistance. A finishing shop produces corrosion-resistant parts in one of two basic ways. The initial step is cleaning. This process involves taking the specific components and placing them in a tank or running them through a washing facility. This eliminates loos dirt, grease, and grime. Blasting then removes any of the more stubborn debris.

After this pre-coating process, finishers apply a conversion coating. This is actually a barrier intended to provide standard or basic corrosion protection. The coating is either crystalline or amorphous, is applied thinly.

Following this, custom powder coating occurs. The actual degree of corrosion resistance is reliant upon the thickness of the application. For the average product, the cured powder may range between thicknesses of 1 to 2 mils. If the intent is to improve the anti-corrosion quality, the powder is applied more heavily. Some custom projects request a thickness of up to 6 mils.

Custom Powder Coating

For many companies, including the automotive industry and heavy equipment manufacturers, two surface issues matter. They are appearance and corrosion resistance. When the process is performed by professionals, custom powder coating delivers both.
