The general public may not stop to consider all the issues involved in choosing a new uniform for the Sheriff’s department, but there is a very serious process involved. These uniforms represent the Sheriff’s office, and they become an easily identifiable way to recognize an officer and find a trusted community resource.

There is also the need to choose a Sheriff uniform that is going to be practical, comfortable and a good investment. Cheap uniforms won’t stand up and will quickly start to look old and tattered, definitely not the impression any law enforcement agency wants to project.

The Brown

Traditionally, a Sheriff uniform has always been brown. This typically includes a brown or tan shirt with tan and brown striped trousers. There are also some departments that wear a brown pant or a tan pant.

The style of pants and shirts will also vary, often departments have several different uniform options based on the officer’s job and requirement while on duty. The traditional type of pant or trouser includes the boot cut uniform pant, but there are also cargo pants, tactical pants and specialty pants for bike, motorcycle or mounted officers.

Shirts can range from t-shirts to polo and short sleeved shirts for the summer, with long sleeved button down dress style shirts and long sleeved polos for the winter. All shirts, just like the pants, are made from fabric that resists snags and offers all the pockets and features that officers need to stay comfortable but also to be able to carry the gear needed.

Comfort and Features

It will be important to choose quality types of designs for any Sheriff uniform that are designed with comfort in mind. Additional features such stain resistant fabric, moisture wicking and breathable materials and all the pockets and options for managing wires, cameras, and even communication devices will be critical factors to consider.
