Abortion is never an easy thing to consider, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself. Some people are not ready to be parents, while others should never be. But abortion shouldn’t be all about taking the easy way out. There are plenty of things you need to be aware of and this short piece will point out some of those, including Gynecological services.

It’s been more than 40 years since the Supreme Court gave its ruling on the Roe vs Wade case. This case determined the woman’s right to have an abortion during the first trimester. What many don’t realize, however, is Roe v Wade is not an “unlimited” right to an abortion. The case took into account the right of women to make sound decisions about their bodies and their future, but also included the state’s interest of protecting life.

The court legalized abortion to the point when the fetus is able to survive inside the woman’s body. After this point, Roe allows each state to prohibit abortion except when life or health is at risk. The freedom to choose abortion can be limited by the legislature and governors in each state. If the system overturns the Roe v. Wade decision, states can prohibit abortion. In these states, the governor and legislature tend to not favor abortion. On the other hand, there are only a few states where the legislature and the governor are pro-abortion.

The best way to reduce the need for abortion and subsequent Gynecological services is to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. Approximately half (49%) of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, and nearly half of these end up in abortion. Better access to birth control, including the “morning after” pill (the emergency contraceptive pill), the most honest and appropriate sex education and family planning services can reduce the number of drastically unintended pregnancies and abortions. Having an abortion legally is very safe and the risk of complications are less than 1%.

Nearly 90% of abortions take place in the first trimester of pregnancy. The first trimester sees about 88% of abortions and less than 3% are made after 21 weeks. Visit Metropolitan Family Planning Clinic to learn more.
