There are many mechanical parts that play a vital role in power transmission. Couplings are one of them. They are used to connect two rotating shafts or an industrial motor to equipment.

Rexnord Couplings in Texas produce high-quality couplings which help to minimize damage from extreme conditions and provide a fail-safe to protect more expensive components.

There are different kinds of couplings used in power transmissions: jaw couplings, elastomeric couplings, gear couplings, grid couplings, and chain couplings.

Each type of coupling has its own specifications and application.

Jaw couplings have three main components: two hubs and an elastomeric spider. They transmit torque through the elastomeric element in compression so they can take more punishment and load during compression than other couplings. Jaw couplings are relatively maintenance free, require no lubrication, and the rubber lasts a long time.

Elastomeric couplings are flexible couplings that use elastomeric polymer to transmit torque. The elastic material is designed to wear out before the metal components.

Gear couplings are flexible and capable of very high torque. The torque is transmitted from the crown-hobbed teeth to the sleeve. The maximum degree of misalignment is 0.5 to 1.5 degrees which can vary with the size of the coupling.

Grid couplings are popular options for applications with high torque. Unlike, gear couplings, grid couplings can cushion shock load and reduce vibrations by as much as 30%. However, they have limited ability to accommodate misalignment and require periodic maintenance.

Chain couplings are flexible, compact, and powerful. The torque is transmitted through the entire roller chain and sprocket teeth which makes for easier alignment.

Choosing the right coupling boils down to the torque, fastening method between the shafts, material of the coupling, and available space.

There are different manufacturers of couplings. Rexnord couplings in Texas has an extensive line of coupling parts and kits.
