Zirconia, a member of the Titanium family of metals, is a reliable and durable material. As such, New York Zirconia fillings are becoming more and more popular.
Dental Zirconia is the powdered form of Zirconium. For many years, the material has been used for implant posts. It is also used in dinnerware and electrical fixtures because of its strength and durability. When used in the dental profession, it is an ideal material for crowns and fillings, especially for the teeth in the back of the mouth, which must withstand a great deal of grinding, crushing, and chewing of food.
Inlay Restoration
An inlay restoration differs from a conventional filling. The inlay is a custom made filling made from Zirconia, gold or a composite material. Inlays are used most often to repair teeth that have been damaged or decayed or when it is necessary to replace a defective filling. Inlays are an excellent substitute for a conventional filling. Inlays are also more conservative than a full crown because less tooth structure has to be removed during the preparation stage.
The Procedure for getting Zirconia Fillings
Zirconia fillings or restorations are ideal for broken teeth, grossly decayed teeth, large fillings, and cosmetic enhancements.
Unlike a conventional filling, the Zirconia inlay procedure takes two appointments with your dentist. During the first appointment, your dentist will take several impressions that are used by dental technicians to prepare the inlay.
Prior to making the accurate impressions, your dentist will prepare the tooth. Any decay will be removed, and the space will be cleaned and prepared. The surface will be prepared in such a way that it will accept the inlay. While the inlay is being produced in a dental lab, a temporary filling will be placed to protect the site.
Once the inlay has been returned to your dentist, it is cemented into position. Maintaining excellent dental hygiene practices and regular dental visits will ensure a long service life of the Zirconia filling.
