Losing teeth has always been an issue. Today, one solution is dental implants. In Manhattan, Long Island and other cities in New York State, dentists have been using this method for decades. Yet, this has not always been the case.

Early Methods of Teeth Replacement

In the past, when someone lost teeth, they either did not have the option of dental implants. They went on with life or they replaced the lost teeth with dentures. These false teeth have been in existence for centuries. The oldest set of complete dentures dates back to Ganjyoji temple in Kii Province, Japan. These were wooden teeth and became common in Japan up to the Meiji period (1868). In times past, they were made not only from wood, but also gold, ox bones, ivory and even human teeth. The human teeth might come from corpses on the ballet field. This was known to happen during the Napoleonic Wars.

These teeth had one thing in common. The dentures were ill fitting. An exact fit was next to impossible. Some of these types of false teeth simply were not practical. They rotted in the mouth or even splintered. It was not until the late 18th century that a new material was found. This was porcelain.

Later Efforts

In 1774, porcelain was offered as a material suitable for dentures. In 1791, one man, Parisian dentist, Nicholas Dubois de Chemant (1753-1824) took out a patent in England. Although the porcelain was decried for being too bright and white, it became very popular. At the time, the porcelain teeth sat on gold plates.

Although there is evidence the Etruscans were the first to employ dental bridges, regular use of this method did not occur until the start of the 20th century. This coincided with the discovery of Novocain and the porcelain jacket crown. Bridges, together with partial dentures began to take the place of the older conventional dentures. After 1952, dentists and their clients were offered another choice – this was dental implants. In Manhattan and other cities around the United States and the world, these appeared to be an excellent solution to an age old problem.

Dental Implants

The man who made the discovery was Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark. In 1952, he found that the metal titanium binds irreversibly to living tissue. This process is called osseointegration. Those following him adopted his findings to practical uses. The result was in 1965, the first dental implants of a practical nature occurred. This launched a new era in cosmetic dentistry around the world.

Today, those who want to replace their teeth and gain a brilliant smile are faced with several choices. Some still prefer dentures or partial dentures of the traditional fashion. Others desire a permanent solution. If this is their preference, dental implants, Manhattan dental cosmetic surgeons say is the way to go. It is a popular method but, as the history of dentistry has revealed, dental methods may evolve further providing clients with still another choice.
