All AC units drip (or they should, at least). However, dripping in the wrong place or in the wrong amount can be a signal that something is wrong with the unit. As implied by their name, AC units do more than cool the air. They can increase overall comfort by cutting humidity as the evaporator absorbs moisture. The water vapor cools into its liquid form and collects on surfaces inside the unit.

The Amount an AC Drips

The condensation coming from an AC unit can vary depending on temperature and humidity levels, as well as efficiency, size and installation method. On hot, humid days, an AC unit can drip out two gallons of water or more. The water can be recycled, and used for irrigation or other purposes. Conversely, AC condensation should not be used for drinking water because of high contaminant levels.

Where Drips Happen

Condensed water usually drips from the unit’s back, from the coil into angled channels. Some of the condensation is used to cool the heating coils, but most drips out. If the AC isn’t dripping, it might not be dehumidifying the room properly, and if it drips from places other than the back, there may be a serious issue that needs A/C Repair.

Dripping AC Troubleshooting

The most common issue with AC condensation is water coming from the unit’s front, which is typically caused by an installation error. Drips can ruin certain surfaces and they can lead to mold growth. The unit should be slightly angled to allow for proper drainage.

Water coming from the front or the side of a unit could signal an air leak. If the AC isn’t sealed, hot air from the outside could turn into condensation as it hits cool surfaces. Homeowners may need to insulate and caulk around the ductwork to reduce condensation, lower energy bills and boost the unit’s efficiency.

If a home’s AC condensation freezes rather than coming out as liquid, the unit needs immediate service. When no water comes out, the drain could be blocked, and Palm Harbor Heating & Air Conditioning will need to come out for A/C Repair.
