When you mention the name “Gramercy Park,” you may be referring to the actual park or the neighborhood that surrounds it. A part of the borough of Manhattan in the city of New York, it has become known for its exclusiveness. In fact, it is one of what are only two private park enclaves in the city. Queen’s has the other private park. Yet, this small, wrought iron fenced in area has a prestige that belies its relatively small size. In fact, so high is this sentiment that many new apartments in Gramercy would love to advertise they have a key to this particular park.
Historic Recognition
In 1966, Gramercy Park became recognized as a historic district. In 1996, designation was granted to specific buildings on the south, east and west sides of the park. They have become regarded as significant landmarks. It all adds up to creating an allure that draws individuals to the neighborhood even if they cannot enter the gates of Gramercy Park and walk the paths – never treading on the forbidden grass.
Visiting Neighborhoods Near Gramercy Park
Gramercy Park may be an exclusive enclave but it does not exist in a vacuum. Nearby you can find reasons to celebrate. Two nearby neighborhoods that border on Gramercy Park are worth visiting. They are:
-
Kips Bay: This largely residential neighborhood was named after Jacobus Henderson Kip. If you are interested in dining out on Eastern cuisine head to Third Avenue. Here you will find foods that are Afghan, Tibetan or even Turkish in nature and flavor.
-
Murray Hill: One excellent reason to visit here is to see the former townhouses of the past centuries rich and powerful. Walk along Sniffen Court to view entirely preserved carriage houses dating from 1864. You may also want to visit the Morgan Library and Museum. Once the private home of J. Pierpont Morgan, it contains on site a variety of famous artists drawings including some by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Picasso. Once the private papers of Morgan, they now are part of the Museum collection.
Other Options
While Murray Hill and Kips Bay are popular destinations, you may also choose to go to other nearby neighborhoods. Among the possible choices are:

Stuyvesant Town
-
Peter Cooper village
Both these places fall into the old Gashouse District. Here was where people were loud and even violent. Today, you will find, instead, child friendly apartments and other residences.
