Several types of artificial snow are used to decorate. The simplest kinds are made from common materials that resemble snow and can be arranged in such a way that it looks like real snow.  Materials like shredded paper or plastic, styrofoam particles, and cotton or poly fibers can be used. These materials work pretty well for simple decorating, but do not look completely realistic. Another issue is that they have a tendency to blow around and get all over everything. You could end up with fake snow particles everywhere and this could become a big mess to clean up afterwards. For a more authentic artificial snow, it’s best to rent or purchase a fake snow machine that uses a snow polymer, especially if you are looking for a falling snow effect.

Fake Snow Machines

You can rent or buy fake snow machines to make fake snow.  They typically use a liquid solution that gets blown out of the machine and creates tiny flakes.  You can tell that the snow is actually foam, but you have to get close enough to touch it to see the difference. The snow produced by the artificial snow machine evaporates easily, and leaves behind no residue. This means that there will be no huge mess to clean up after using one of these fake snow machines. Fake snow evaporates once it lands on a surface.  These machines are really best to use for creating a falling snow effect.

Polymer Snow Material

Some fake snow is made from a super-absorbent polymer.  This kind of fake snow was originally invented for indoor use at snowboarding parks.  If it’s good enough to actually snowboard on, chances are it’s some very realistic looking and feeling snow. The polymer used in fake snow is a type of plastic that can absorb vast amounts of water.  When water is applied to the polymer powder, it soaks it in and expands. The fake snow looks and acts very much like genuine natural snow.  This stuff can be used to create very realistic snow coverage on the ground.  The first company to offer this snow polymer in the US was Business Name.  They also have snow machines that can create falling snow.
