Kauai is a magical and beautiful tropical island, and people from all over the world have precious life-long memories of their holidays here. You might think that the island is mostly resorts and that the resort price tag puts a holiday out of reach.
That would be wrong!
There are lots of alternative accommodations from small hotels and hostels, to vacation rentals, to tent camping in the state parks. It all depends on what you want from your vacation. This is Kauai – you do you.
What Do?
There’s so much to do away from the resorts that show the real Kauai! Let’s look at some adventures for the DIY (Do It Yourself Holidayers) who want the best that the Garden Isle has to offer.
Ziplining: Fly through the rainforest canopy, the mountain valleys, and along the shore. This activity is a great way to see the island from above at speeds close to 40 miles per hour. It’s a better activity for older kids and adults only, and there are some medical restrictions as well.
Whale Watching: There is little more awe-inspiring than being close to a whale, and the islands have one of the most diverse populations on the planet for whale watching. In addition to Humpbacks and Sperm whales, a variety of smaller species are represented – including several types of dolphins and toothed whales. You may even see a Sei or Fin whale, two endangered species that are slowly rebounding after centuries of whale hunting.
Powered Hang Gliding: For thrill seekers, soaring above the island in a powered hang-glider or ultralight aircraft is a big adrenaline rush. There are weight and age restrictions, so consult the company for their parameters for guests.
Build Your Adventure
There’s so much more to do and see. Try deep sea fishing with Lahela Sportfishing, hike through Kauai’s pristine wilderness, surf, or just taking it easy and be pampered at a spa. Kauai has it all right there for you to create an adventure of a lifetime.
