Commercial refrigeration is an important part of many industries. Refrigeration is used in such diverse areas as food processing plants, food distribution facilities, warehouses, biotech rooms, medical care facilities, mortuaries, etc. With such demand being placed on refrigeration in California, developing a defined standard is not practical. The greatest majority of facilities are custom designed and built, each meeting the specific demands and needs of the end user.
There are many different aspects to the design, each of which must be addressed. Two very important issues are:
Physical Size
There is a fine balance between the size of the refrigeration system and the cost. Commercial refrigeration facilities are usually marginally larger than they need be to contain the product but not to the point where there is a detrimental impact on operating costs.
A commercial refrigerator that is undersized will cycle more often. This constant on-off of motors and compressors subject them to undue strain. If, on the other hand, the unit is overpowered, it will not cycle often enough to rid the room of humidity. High humidity is the cause of unwanted icing.
Keeping Cooling Costs under Control
Operating cost is a major concern for those that own and operate commercial refrigeration facilities. There are ways that help to keep costs under control without sacrificing the integrity of the product in storage.
As the product is moved into and out of the refrigerator, strip curtains help to keep the cold air in and the warm air out. Door gaskets should be inspected and replaced if worn. Turn the interior lights off once in a while. See if there is any evidence of light around the doors and other places where panels accommodate services such as electricity.
The key to operating efficiency is quality. A poorly designed and constructed refrigeration system will consume more energy. With the cost of energy being what it is, you will spend considerably more over time than you would, had the decision been made to install the best equipment available.
