The Electrical Wiring in your home or business is a complex arrangement of outlets, switches, breakers and wires designed to spread the load while still making electric usage convenient. Your household wiring is segregated into circuits that may have one or more rooms connected to the same breaker. In some cases, you may find that rooms which share the same wall have wiring that is on multiple breakers. This is one reason that working on electrical problems is so difficult. The electrician needs to test the circuit to ensure that no power is flowing before they attempt any repairs. You can’t rely on tripping the breaker to eliminate power flow.

Surprisingly, the wiring in your home can last for many years. However, there are places that can cause problems. For instance, the mechanical switches that control the lights might fail through overuse or age. Power outlets can degrade over time and this is especially true when those outlets are overloaded. An overloaded outlet will get hot and the heat can melt plastic or corrode the metal. Even worse, the heat from an overloaded circuit can result in fire. The danger of this situation cannot be stressed enough because many home fires are the result of overloaded electric circuits. The solution to this problem is the installation of a new circuit to carry the additional load.

The installation of a new circuit in your home begins with determining how much extra load the wiring carries. For example, if you have a large entertainment system in your living room plus one or more computers, then you may need an extra circuit. Other reasons to install an extra circuit include the installation of new appliances or additional air conditioners. Any appliance that uses higher voltages will need an independent circuit. You can see this in the breaker box where there are individual breakers for items like the stove, dryer, water heater, etc. Certain portable air conditioners may require a new circuit as well. Small AC units run on one hundred and ten volt supplies, but the larger ones require two hundred and twenty volts.
