A CDL Permit Test in Illinois is usually part of a commercial driving license (CDL) course from an accredited school. There are some requirements that are needed before a permit is granted, and before taking a CDL test at the end of any course. Those requirements include passing a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination, having a driving record from the Secretary of State in which the person is a driving license holder, and passing a DOT drug screening test. The permit is needed for the hands-on training, or “truck time” portion of any course, which begins after about forty hours of classroom time.

The cost for the physical, screening, and CDL Permit Test in Illinois is included in the tuition of the course, depending on the school chosen for the course. Experienced schools will offer many courses for different types of commercial driving licenses. A Class B CDL course, for example, is a one-hundred and sixty hour course for those who wish to drive single commercial vehicles, such as straight trucks and delivery vans. A forty hour class is also available for people who hold a Class B CDL and want to upgrade to a Class A CDL.

Three Class A courses are offered. The first is an OTR Pro Driver course. That is one-hundred and sixty hours that prepares covers safe driving techniques, complete education in tractor trailer driving, and hands-on training in vehicles. Those who pass the course can complete the test for a CDL that will allow them to drive tractor trailer trucks over-the-road (OTR). The local driver course, which is two-hundred hours in duration, includes emphasis on local driving. That means driving in demanding local traffic, pick=up ad delivery operations, and added defensive driving training to go along with the safe driving component.

The third CDL Class A course is for Regional Pro Drivers. It combines features of the OTR and local driving courses for more flexibility and versatility for job placement opportunities. This course is two-hundred and forty hours in duration. Courses can be taken on a full or part time basis, and there are a few financing options.
