Trans men who want to undergo transgender surgery from female to male must meet several requirements. These requirements are meant to ensure that you’re mentally prepared for the invasive procedure and that your health is in good shape. The following are some requirements for gender reassignment surgery from female to male.
Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy is required for those who wish to undergo gender reassignment surgery. You will need to be on hormones for at least two years before your surgery can take place.
Two Letters of Recommendation from Mental Health Professionals
You must have two letters of recommendation from mental health professionals before transgender surgery from female to male. These letters should be from a therapist and a psychiatrist. The therapists can be any licensed mental health professional in your area who has worked with transgender patients as long as they have known you for at least six months.
A Physical Exam
Your surgeon will need to examine you in person to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery. This exam can be done any time after you have met with an endocrinologist and been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The exam usually consists of a physical examination and history taking by the surgeon who will perform your operation but may also involve blood tests or other diagnostic procedures such as an MRI scan or ECG.
