An orthodontist is a professional who has been trained to treat tooth alignment issues. Dentists recommend that children see the orthodontist by the age of 7. However, you are never too old to see an orthodontist in the West Loop. There are several signs that indicate you need to make an orthodontist appointment.

You Have an Overbite or Underbite

An overbite occurs when your top teeth overlap the bottom ones. If your bottom teeth overlap the top teeth, then this is known as underbite. Both of these problems have to be corrected because they can cause damage to your teeth.

Crowded or Crooked Teeth

Crowding makes your teeth look twisted, slanted or uneven. Not only is this an aesthetic issue, but it can make brushing and flossing difficult. This leads to plaque buildup, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Open Bite

If your top and bottom teeth do not touch, then this is known as an open bite. This problem can also make it harder for you to clean your teeth. Open bites are sometimes a genetic issue. However, they can also be caused by pacifier use and thumb sucking.

Crossbite

If your bottom and top teeth do not line up properly on one side when your mouth is closed, then this is known as a crossbite. This can cause tooth damage. Aligning the jaws and teeth properly can usually fix this problem.

Mouth or Jaw Pain

You may not see a problem, but that does not mean that there is not one. If you have mouth or jaw pain, then it is time for you to see an orthodontist. Your orthodontist can tell you what is causing your jaw pain.
