If you have 5083 precision aluminum plate to weld, you may want to use TIG welding. TIG is a good way to produce quality welds on thinner metals and filler material for welding is optional. Here are some helpful tips to make your aluminum welding easier.
Power
Use the lowest power setting you have for aluminum when you first begin. It is the best choice for practice welding. This will help you learn the importance of proper penetration.
Keeping it Clean
You should have a very clean welding surface. This gives you the best arc and welds. Keep one brush for cleaning aluminum only and don’t use it for anything else (like stainless steel). This helps to avoid contamination which can weaken your welds.
Use the Right Kind of Tungsten
Many experienced welders use green tungsten when welding aluminum. It is also important to use smaller tungsten for thinner metals. If not, you may have to use more heat than necessary and this can burn through your material or warp it, even when using precision aluminum plate. On the other hand, it’s important not to use tungsten which is too thin for the job, or you risk heat damage.
Don’t touch puddles with the tip of the tungsten. If you make this mistake you must re-grind your tungsten. Otherwise, the arc may not be true and it can create a rough weld surface. For best results, use a special sharpener designed for tungsten. This will give you sharper points.
Protect Your Lungs
When tungsten is being used, it can create toxic fumes. Make sure to use the proper respirator to avoid damage from radioactive components.
Shielding Gases
Be careful not to use 100 percent helium or you may have problems getting your arc started. For the best welds on precision aluminum plate, consider gas made from 25 percent helium and 75 percent argon.
