Varicose veins don’t look good. Some might think that removing them is nothing more than a cosmetic procedure. That’s not entirely true, though, when you consider that some types of varicose veins are signs of a deeper problem. More prominent varicose veins could also generate discomfort that the pain might start interfering with your ability to take care of everyday tasks. Before that happens, nip the problem in the bud. Consider several suggestions on how to pull that off.

Surgery

There are surgical treatments for varicose veins removal. The surgery might require patients to stay overnight at the facility, especially if the procedure must be done on both legs.

Sclerotherapy

The doctor injects a chemical that scars and closes the veins. The veins then fade away in a few weeks. The treatment is effective, but there’s a bit of a downside. You’ll need to wear compression socks during recovery. If that’s not a problem for you, though, you’ll want to give this a try, especially given the short recovery time.

Ligation and Stripping

Two incisions are made for this procedure: at the top of the target vein and at the other end of the vein, usually at the knee or ankle. The vein is tied up and sealed. A thin and flexible wire is then threaded through the bottom of the vein. When the doctor pulls that out, it also takes the vein away with it.

Ablation

During the radiofrequency ablation, the doctor will make an incision above or below the knee. They thread a narrow tube into the vein. In some cases, though, they might use a catheter. The procedure is usually carried out with a local anesthetic, though, so keep that in mind.
