Concrete is a porous substance. While it requires water to produce, place and cure it, concrete is not compatible with it afterwards. In fact, it needs to be protected from the potential damage that can be caused by water. Water can cause cracks and other chinks to appear in the surface. This, in turn, can cause structural damage and increase the costs of maintenance, let alone affect the safety of any who use or are in close proximity to concrete construction. This is why it is essential you make sure concrete waterproofing is an integral part of the entire flooring
Concrete Waterproofing Technology
Concrete waterproofing is not a single type. Technology has made it possible to protect concrete from water using one of several different methods. Among them are the following:
1. Liquid Membrane Concrete Waterproofing: A liquid membrane is liquid and forms a membrane on the concrete’s surface. It goes on liquid and becomes a rubbery coating. You apply a polyurethane liquid membrane in one of several ways. These are: spray, roller or trowel. Each method requires a separate grade of liquid membrane.
2. Sheet Membrane Concrete Waterproofing: These come in large, square sheets usually of rubberized asphalt membranes. The material is very rubber-like and sticky. It self-adheres to the walls where the soil is going to be placed. This is more expensive and less effective than pure liquid concrete waterproofing although it can be easily applied uniformly.
3. Cementitious Waterproofing: This substance is applied directly to the concrete. It hardens and becomes as uniform as the base surface while providing that extra protection. Many favor it because of its user-friendliness.
4. Bentonite Concrete Waterproofing: These come in pre-prepared sheets. The waterproofing substance is layered between two sheets. The sheets are applied to the concrete. It protective qualities are only activated in the presence of water which means you cannot view the results. Yet, this method, shunned by some because of this characteristic, is a method that is easy in application, quick to use and even has the benefit of being both save and not harmful for the environment.
The Necessity of Concrete Waterproofing
Concrete is porous. It can be easily damaged by water and corroded by acids. By applying some form of concrete waterproofing you are accomplishing a number of things all at once. You are ensuring the surface of your structure or floor or deck continues to look attractive. You are preserving the concrete from damage. You are also doing what so many industries and individuals work hard to do – save money. By employing the right type of concrete waterproofing, you can save money on maintenance and repairs and delay replacement for many years to come.
