While California wine country usually gets all of the attention, Michigan has a wine country too. The area along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan has long been famous for its fruit orchards and vineyards. In fact, locally grown wine from South Haven, MI is some of the best wine in the country.
There are nearly 150 wineries in Michigan, producing over 3 million gallons of wine every year. In 2020, two Michigan wineries took home the gold at the American Wine Society awards. While Michigan wine seems like a well-kept secret, those in the know can’t wait for May; May is Michigan Wine Month, and visitors can enjoy several wine trails along the shores of Lake Michigan.
A weekend of wine tasting makes a great weekend getaway. Taking the wine trail means enjoying samplings of Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Traminette, all grown in the fertile Michigan soil. While you’re in South Haven, you can also enjoy the beautiful beaches and Van Buren State Park.
The frigid Michigan autumns also allow vintners to occasionally produce sweet, rare “ice wine”; if the grapes freeze solid and are harvested, they’ll produce a uniquely sweet wine that has been cherished since Roman times. Michigan is one of the few regions in the world that can produce natural ice wine.
Michigan wineries are also famous for their fabulous fruit wines, made from locally-grown berries, cherries, and apples.
