Not all paints are the same, there are not only paints that are oil based and water based, there are some paints that last a lot longer than others under the same conditions. It is only expected that the weather has a great deal to do with how long the paint on the exterior of a home lasts; dry, cool Midwestern climates are not nearly as hard on paint finishes as is the salt laden air of the Eastern seaboard.
Paint is a product produced from water plus chemical additives. Traditional paint is made up of about 60 percent water, 17 percent plasticizers, 12 percent pigment and the rest is filler. On the other hand, permanent paint has only 21 percent water plus 46 percent elastomeric resin, 16 percent ceramics and anti mildew additive and the remaining 17 percent is pigment. It is easy to see that permanent paint which has far less water and no fillers is better formulated to stand up to whatever weather is thrown at it.
A paint coating that contains ceramic is extremely durable; it maintains natural flexibility and is virtually maintenance free. When this paint is applied the rubber like membrane adheres and bonds to the substrate like the skin on your back. This unique material, when used on your home or office building will retain its freshly applied look for many years.
What makes ceramic paint coatings so great?
Any painted surface will be subjected to abuse; it must withstand the elements, resist abrasion and remain looking as if it is freshly applied. Permanent paint which includes a high percentage of ceramic material excels at these requirements plus more, it must resist cracking, peeling, flaking and blistering as well.
Like any superior finish, attention must be paid to proper preparation, if any paint is applied over dirt it will eventually fail, paint must adhere to the substrate. The first step of a successful application of permanent paint is a thorough cleaning of the surface using a high pressure washer, once this has been completed the painting contractor will give the surface a good once-over, looking for areas that need special attention, perhaps a section of stucco has broken loose or a few boards are rotten.
Once the special areas have been attended to the current paint on the building is scraped, for paint to bond the surface must be clean and stable. As the surface is being prepared, the painters will repair small cracks and apply caulk on vertical surfaces and around the windows and doors. Once the all important prep is completed the entire surface is primed and finally the permanent paint is applied.
