FTIR or Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy is a type of test or analysis that is instrumental in determining the organic as well as inorganic makeup and composition of a given sample.

The Process
The process of FTIR testing uses equipment that places the sample in front of a source of ultraviolet, visible light. This light is then absorbed in different wavelengths in a way that is identifiable as that of a particular molecular bond. The advantage of FTIR technology is that the light is a broadband light source, which allows for quick processing of the results through narrowing down the possible testing bands.
After the initial broad UV light test is completed, the beam will be specifically modified or focused on the appropriate UV light waves that are of relevance for the specific sample. This is done continually, allowing for different types of waves to be transmitted and blocked by the equipment, all controlled by a computer that records precise data for analysis.

With the very precise analysis of the types of covalent bonds and the functional groups within a sample, FTIR testing becomes essential in determining known and unknown samples. It can be used with polymers in solid form, but the same methods can also be used for testing liquids and gases.
This is an ideal testing method to screen for impurities, to verify formulations, in reverse engineering of polymers and to identify unknown samples. It is not typically used as a stand-alone process but rather used in conjunction with other polymer testing methods.
