When there is a need for very high levels of corrosion resistance or in applications where extremely high temperatures are a concern with a system, part or component, Inconel alloys are often considered the ideal material. This family of superalloys is also resistant to stress and corrosion cracking, which makes it important in many applications.

Uses of Inconel

Inconel alloys are found in applications similar to that of stainless steel. However, with the added corrosion and temperature resistance of this superalloy, it makes a better option and offers longer life cycles. Inconel studs are often used in shipbuilding and other marine applications due to their resistance to even the very damaging effects of salt water.

In the aerospace industry, Inconel studs are typically used in the fabrication of jet engines. The extreme heat and pressure that is produced in these engines, as well as the very cold conditions the outside of the jets, are exposed to, make Inconel alloys a top consideration.

Other uses of studs and parts made from this alloy group include chemical processing systems, steam generators, pressurized systems and nuclear reactors. It is also used on spacecraft as well as in the automotive industry.

Considerations

The cost of Inconel studs will be more than stainless steel studs, but the benefits and ability to withstand corrosion and temperatures offset the slight difference in price.

Generally, Inconel is a difficult material to weld, but there are some types of alloys in the family that are designed to work very well with stud welding processes. These include the 625 and 718 alloys, which are recommended for any arc welding process as well as for gas tungsten and electron beam welding operations.

The alloy 625 is particularly important in marine applications including shipbuilding. This alloy doesn’t have to be heat treated for strength and is also highly resistant to corrosion in crevices, which is an important consideration in marine projects.
